DESCRIPTION: Celebrate the timely publication of Prayer for the Morning Headlines: On the Sanctity of Life and Death, a new collection of poignant and powerful poetry by priest, anti-war activist, and Nobel Peace Prize Nominee Daniel Berrigan, with introduction by Howard Zinn, photographs by Adrianna Amari, and endorsements from the late Kurt Vonnegut, Ramsey Clark, Martin Sheen, James Carroll, Amy Goodman and others.

The book is a collection of poems and photographs that are complementary, and Zinn's quote relates to both ("...it was in Baltimore that Adrianna Amari took her extraordinary photographs of sculptures scattered through the city. It is all there, as in Berrigan's poems- life and death, the prayer that comes with commitment, the hope that comes with resistance, the visions of a world where peace and justice prevail").

Sponsored by Cooper Union, the event is hosted by Amy Goodman (Democracy Now!), featuring Daniel Berrigan, Adriana Amari and special guest appearances by Ramsey Clark, The Brooklyn Youth Chorus (to confirm), Thurman E. Scott and students from Actors Theater Workshop and others.

Copies of the book will be on sale, courtesy of Bluestockings, photographs from the book will be on exhibit, and representatives from peace and social justice organizations will display information.

MORE INFO: The Izzy Award

Here is the press release from Ithaca College:

ITHACA, NY — The Park Center for Independent Media (PCIM) at Ithaca College will honor the winners of the first annual Izzy Award for special achievement in independent media in a ceremony on Tuesday, March 31. “Democracy Now!” host/executive producer Amy Goodman and blogger Glenn Greenwald will each speak at the event, which is being held at 7 p.m. at the State Theatre in downtown Ithaca. The award ceremony is free and open to the public, though tickets are required.

Tickets may be picked up at the Ithaca College Campus Center or the State Theatre box office. Located at 105 W. State Street, the State Theatre box office is open Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., and before performances from two hours prior to showtime until a half hour past curtain. The IC ticket office, located in the recreation center on the first floor of Campus Center, is open Monday-Friday, 12:10 to 6 p.m.

The Izzy Award is named after the legendary muckraking journalist Isidor Feinstein “Izzy” Stone, who exposed government deceit and corruption while championing civil liberties, racial justice and international diplomacy. The judges chose Goodman and Greenwald to receive the inaugural award based on their “pathbreaking journalistic courage and persistence in confronting conventional wisdom, official deception and controversial issues.”

Greenwald’s blog is hosted at Salon.com, where week after week he skewers hypocrisy, deception and revisionism on the part of the powers that be in government and the media. He has toughly criticized both Republicans and Democrats, and his writing frequently sparks debate in major media and on Capitol Hill. On television, radio and the Internet, Goodman offers a cutting-edge broadcast featuring issues, experts and debates rarely heard in corporate media. “Democracy Now!” is a daily stop for journalists, scholars, officials and activists seeking not just to get behind the news, but to stay ahead of the news.

Judges of the inaugural Izzy Award were Park Center for Independent Media director Jeff Cohen; University of Illinois communications professor and author Robert W. McChesney; and Linda Jue, director and executive editor of the San Francisco-based G.W. Williams Center for Independent Journalism.

Based in the Roy H. Park School of Communications, the PCIM was launched in 2008 as a national center for the study of media outlets that create and distribute content outside traditional corporate systems and news organizations.

This year marks a new era in United States government and the 13th anniversary of Democracy Now! KVMR is proud to host the return of Amy Goodman, award-winning host of Democracy Now!, and her brother, investigative journalist David Goodman.

As is evident with the myriad bailouts and their attendant excesses, and Pres. Obama's attenuated withdrawal plans from Iraq, along with his pledge to escalate the war in Afghanistan, the importance of independent media and strong, independent grassroots movements are essential. We need a media that covers these movements, that doesn't ignore, or worse, mock or stigmatize such civic engagement. Amy and David will share with you the importance of independent, community media, especially in covering the grassroots movements and individual courage that effects genuine change.
TICKETS:Advance Tickets: $16 for KVMR members & $21 for non-members. Door Ticket Prices are $20 for KVMR members & $25 for non-members. QUOTES:
"Amy and David Goodman have written a wondrous and vital book. The title itself -- Standing up to the Madness -- tips us off that we are far better off as humans if we get the facts and know our history, and stand up for a world of Peace, Grace, Beauty and Sanity.”
—Studs Terkel, author

“ Trust Amy Goodman and her brother David Goodman to find the fierce and fearless voices that must awaken us from sleep.”
—Alice Walker, author, The Color Purple

“ Amy Goodman doesn’t practice trickle-down journalism. She goes where the silence is, she breaks the sound barrier. …She believes the media should be a sanctuary for dissent, the Underground Railroad tunneling beneath the plantation.”
—Bill Moyers, host, Bill Moyers Journal

“Standing Up to the Madness is a hopeful story about how to fix what’s wrong in our world. Read this book. Get outraged. Get inspired. Then do like the heroes who Amy and David Goodman write about: stand up and fight to make the world a better, more peaceful and just place.”
—Tim Robbins, actor and activist

Join award-winning writer Mark Danner as he discusses his new groundbreaking book Stripping Bare the Body: Politics Violence War (Nation Books). Danner will be interviewed by investigative journalist Amy Goodman, host and co-founder of Democracy Now!

Drawing on accounts of politics, violence, and war from around the world, Stripping Bare the Body is a moral history of American power during the last quarter century. Moving from bloody battlegrounds and dark prison cells to air-conditioned offices, the book recounts how the United States passed from the Cold War’s violent certainties through the ideological confusions of the post-Cold War world into the ongoing fanatical evangelism of the War on Terror and the Iraq War. The grim and compelling narrative tells the tale of the final years of the American Century and the wreckage it has left in its wake.

The discussion will be followed by audience questions and a book signing.
